Instead of bending your paper away from the mat, you are bending the mat away from your paper. But the magic is that your paper doesn’t curl. It seems completely opposite of what you should do. Curl the mat away from your design while it lays flat on your work surface. It makes sense to just start lifting the paper off in the opposite way that you put it down.
